Large-scale pilot study of acceptability and efficiency in Normandy pharmacies to evaluate the benefit of an early screening of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients.

The DiabeyeIA project was funded by the Normandy Region in 2020 for the diabetic retinopathy screening.
This project is led by ADCIS and the Diabetes and Ophthalmology departments of the University Hospital Center in Caen, Normandy, (CHU de Caen) in partnership with OphtAI, Thea Laboratories, and Optomed.
Description of the project
ADCIS provides Normand pharmacies with its automatic screening software for diabetic retinopathy, integrated into an Optomed retinograph provided by Optomed, a Finnish company specialized in ophthalmology hand held devices.
Pharmacies involved in the project will be able to propose to diabetic patients an eye fundus for free, when renewing their prescription. A technician in the pharmacy will then take images of the patient retina. It will speed up the screening process and will allow to see patients before the age 60 year old, without having to wait during several months for an appointment with an ophthalmologist.
This study will determine the proportion of patients who can be screened for diabetic retinopathy with this device compared to the literature.
